Atama Mundial 9 Gi Review

mundial_blu_front_1

Atama has been present in BJJ since 1989, and is for sure one of the first and most traditional kimono brands. My first ever BJJ kimono was an Atama single weave which lasted 9 years!

Source: our friends at Gireviews.net

The Atama Mundial 9 is Atama’s most recent offering since the Mundial #7 (successor to the Mundial #5). The most noticeable change from the mundial 7 to the Atama mundial 9 is the change in looks. The mundial 9 is the exact same material as the mundial 7 and the same cut. The most noticeable difference is the change in embroidery. Just like the Mundial 7, the 9 has no seam in the back, and the jacket is made from one piece of material. The collar and pants are made of ripstop material. It’s really a great gi for training or for competition, but not as light as the lightweight gis on the market. It’s comfortable for everyday use and really sets the standard in the market for a true balance of competition cut and mobility in a gi.

atama mundial 9 gi review

Review of the Atama Mundial 9:

First impressions:
It feels softer than the “7
It’s still lighter than a double weave
The “ATAMA” on the shoulders is black and looks sharp

Shrinking and fitting:
The Atamas always seem to take time to fully shrink and settle
ATAMA 9 pants are bigger than the atama 7
About 5% shrinkage but it takes like 6-7 washes at least to shrink to how you like it
The top fits great and the pants fit really good, but are a little long – although I personal prefer a bit of length at the bottom
The gi top has a much trimmer fit around the torso and the skirt length shrank about 3″ so it comes barely to the top of my thigh, just where I like it. The pants didn’t shrink nearly as much… maybe one inch in length if that, and no noticeable difference around my rump.
I absolutely love the ripstop fabric for the pants. They’re so much lighter and cooler, and the fabric doesn’t stick to your legs when soaking wet the way the ordinary twill/denim of mortal pants will.

Summary: The Mundial 9 is, as expected from Atama, a solid and great quality gi that is good for competition as well as everyday training. I wish that your Atama lasts as long as mine did :)

MKimonos Palladium Gi Review

Palladium

MKimonos Palladium gi  is the latest in MKimono’s line of premium Jiu Jitsu gis. From the very start when I started to train Jiu-Jitsu I had always been fascinated by this legendary brand coming straight from the source: Rio De Janeiro, Brazil! I remember watching videos and reading old Gracie mags where I would see my heroes Royler Gracie, Saulo Ribeiro or Marcio Feitosa wearing the famous kimono with the M logo. The fact was that not many guys in Europe had Mkimonos aka Machado Kimonos, so it made into somewhat of a novelty. I like lightweight gis with simple design (not too bling), but also that are very solid, so I finally made the step of getting my hands on one and chose to get the same model that the legends use, the Mkimono Palladium .I contacted Luciana Machado at Mkimono and she provided me with ultra friendly service and I really felt that Brazilian warmth. Luciana is famous in the industry for her first class customer service. She has recently revamped her website and is now based in Europe which is great for us. They cary the great Mkimonos Hybrid Gi and the Ultra Light Summer Gi.

Luciana Machado Simon, owner of MKimonos

Luciana Machado Simon, owner of MKimonos

Mkimonos History: MKimonos was established in 1995 by Luciana & brother Marcelo Machado after Marcelo received hisblack belt from Master Royler Gracie. MKimonos started in a small factory in Ilha do Governador in Rio. Luciana & Marcelo began selling kimonos to Marcelo’s students at Gracie Tijuca & Gracie Humaita which was run by Royler Gracie. MKimonos are the originators of many of the new weaves we see today from the hybrid weave & summer weave, and also the first company to use the gold weave. They have sponsored such athletes as Royler Gracie, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, Samir Chantre, Shaolin Ribeiro etc..

The Palladium Weave is an MKimonos exclusive that was created in 2011. It maintains the texture and comfort of Gold Weave while providing the strength and durability of a Double Weave. It is heavier than the Hybrid, however some competitors prefer if for competitions due it being difficult for your opponent to grab and manipulate. The new design features a return to the classic Blue M and straight JIU-JITSU logo. The top contains proprietary revisions to two reinforcement points while maintaining the traditional, clean MKimonos lines. The pants feature three enhancements to the reinforcements, new quadruple stitching on the cuffs and a new, corded drawstring.

GileMkimonos2.jpg

Here are the specs:

1. Palladium weave is a heavier weave and much more resistant and durable than the hybrid or gold weaves. Matter of factly, its as tough as a double weave. The jacket made from high quality cotton, tough and very durable. Yet very soft.

2. Durable cotton double thick pants with reinforced knees

3. Thicker lapel than the Mkimono hybrid.

4. Superb reinforcement at the key stress areas

5. Clean and simple design

6. Shrink to fit.

7. IBJJF legal

Weight for the A3: 2,2 kgs

Sizing and shrinking:

I told Luciana that I preferred my gis to be a tighter fit so she recommended that I get a A3. I’m 1m85, 82 kilos. When the gi arrived and I tried it on it was already slightly bigger but after a few washes it shrank to fit me perfectly. Shrinkage is minimal if you follow the directions. After about 3 weeks of training everyday in the gi, it hasn’t shrank and perfectly fits me.

Gilemkimonos3

Material and durability:

This kimono is a return to the original Blue M and Jiu Jitsu logo and the finish has been done with classy embroidery. Pants are your standard cotton double thick pants with reinforced knees, which makes them perfect for everyday training. The Palladium weave is similar in texture to that of a Gold Weave. This gi is loaded with reinforcements at the key stress areas. The sleeve cuffs & pant cuff s areas are reinforced with quadruple stitching. Other high stress areas like the inner crotch & armpit are reinforced with a stronger material to minimize any material defects.

Nice high quality and classy M shoulder embroidery.mkimonos_2247_146477502

Look:
The 2012 design features the return to the classic Blue M and straight JIU-JISTU logo. In my opinion, this is one of the nicest embroidery combinations in Jiu-jItsu kimonos nowadays.
The great thing about this gi is how simple and understated it looks. I decorated mine with my academy patch and two BJJ Eastern Europe patches. It really is a nice classy low key gi but with some details which make it stick out.

Feeling when rolling:
Training: I wore the kimono every day for 6 weeks, The gi is very comfortable to roll in. The first time I rolled with it I felt like I was wearing a golden armour. The gi really looked different than the others in class not because it was flashy or anything, it was just that nobody in my academy had ever seen an MKimono before and many were grabing it and tugging to test the quality and they were impressed! This Gi feels a bit heavier than most but once you get used to the extra weight you will find this a comfortable GI to wear use. And the probably one of the toughest jiu jitsu gi you can find in the market today. It’s as tough as a Howard (HCK) but way lighter.

In Conclusion
The Mkimono Palladium will last a very long time and is fantastic quality. It retails at 200 dollars which is about 150 euros. This places it in the mid price range for gis however for something as high quality as this and that will last you at least 10 years, it’s money well spent. The fact is not as widespread as other gis like Koral or Keiko Raca so you will have the added benefit of having a authentic gi with tradition and coming straight from the source.

I will give the Mkimono Palladium a mark of 9,5/10

Pros
-Great brand tradition and prestige
-High quality material,
-Strong yet light pants.
-Very solid and will last a long time
-High quality strong fabric
-Strong stitching
- Classy embroidery
- Durable and light

Cons
-Heavier than most gis.

black xt

Source: our friends at Gireviews.net

We recently reviewed the White Gameness XT Gi now you can check out the black XT Gi available at Gameness Europe.

As soon as I opened the box, I thought wow this is a sick gi. The color of the contrast stitching and the embroidered pit bull logos…. everything looked great.

A couple of my training partners have the XT in white and said it ran a little big and didn’t shrink much at all.

Black-XT-Left-Shoulder

Fit

I typically wear an A3 in everything; I guess I fall in between A2/A3 since I am 6ft and 73 kgs. But, I have always gone with the A3 for length, so I figured I would try an A2 in the XT and I am glad I did.

It fit pretty good right out of the box. The gi was a little long in the sleeves, but I washed and dried it on high heat for about 10 minutes and now its perfect. I have rolled in it several times already and believe it is the best gi I have ever owned…. I love it! I would recommend it to everyone. Below is some more info on the gi:

The specs:

Reinforced stitching including the elbows, a thick rubber collar, 10 Loop MaxDraw ® drawstring system, Gameness Platinum 100% Cotton pants and a 550 gram Pearl Weave top. The XT features blue contrast stitching, embroidery and a newly designed chest patch.

Feeling when rolling: As a A3, the gi weighs weighs in at around 2.1 kilos which is around the same weight as a  Koral MKM. The gi is really comfortable and the thick collar will help you out in defending collar chokes. It is suitable for hot or cold weather rolling.

Weight:

A1: 1,70 kg

A2: 1,96 kg

A3: 2,12 kg

A4: 2,28 kg

A5: 2,46 kg

Sizing:

A1 155-170 cm 50-62 kg
A2 170-180 cm 63-75 kg
A3 180-183 cm 76-90 kg
A4 183-192 cm 91-110 kg
A5 192-< cm > 110 kg

So in my personal opinion I would give this gi a 9,5/10 rating in terms of satisfaction. I really enjoy rolling in it and it looks great too!
The plus points for me are the fit, the high quality, the classy embroidery and design. It is of course very comfortable to wear The minus point is that the pants are slightly heavier than rip stop, but on the hand, they are very durable so you can’t really complain.

Product Review: VO2 Max “Iron Fist” Grip Trainers

pull

When I first heard of Grip trainers, I was skeptical…For me, why should you buy a modified piece of gi material when you could use a old gi or a towel to work your grip? The creators of VO2 Max sent me a free pair of “Iron Fist” grip trainer and as soon as I started using them, my opinion changed and I immediately understood the functionality of the this device. I’ve been training with the Iron Fist for 2 weeks now and my grip is at another level.

Why is Grip Training Important: Grip training is where it all starts, going back to the fundamentals. The first point of contact in any fight is the grip. How can you win a fight if you can’t hold onto your opponent?

How do you grip train?

This type of training often overlooked by BJJ players. Grabbing metal bars at a gym isn’t exactly the same as grabbing the sleeve of your opponent’s kimono in a fight. And it is not exactly subtle to carry and wrap a giant kimono around those bars, which is also extremely dangerous.

You can practice the spider grip, the pistol grip, or the lapel grip (my favorite) with all the integrated options in the sleeve. I have trained fixing the Iron Fist to kettlebells and training swings, snatches and cleans. Another favorite exercise is the static farmer walk where you basically hang on to the collar grip for as long as you can. This usually starts to burn your grips after about 20 secs!

If you are in a gym, you can attach the Iron Fists to the cable row to work out at the same time the pulling shoulder muscle as well as your grip. There is also the old fashion pull up using the sleeve grips. It is pretty tough!

My training consisted of doing static farmer walks until failure (until I could only hold on to the sleeve for less than 5 second) every night before sleeping. It is brutal but the benefits are great.

vo2

Static farmer walk is sure to burn your grips

Features: The VO2 Max “Iron Fist” grip trainer features 7 crucial grips, more than any other in the market. It is designed with a unique integrated lapel, allowing you to attach it and practice your grips virtually anywhere.

You can practice the spider grip, the pistol grip, or the lapel grip (my favorite) with all the integrated option in the sleeve.

Vo2Max2

Opinion and results: There are numerous grip trainers for grapplers that are available on the market such as the Orangahangs, Grapple grips, Scramble grip trainers etc...The Iron Fist is really good because of the integrated lapel grip which makes it so functional. The material is really strong and won’t rip.

After training with this for 2 weeks, my grips in training felt really strong. I love playing the spider guard with one hand in the collar and the other on the sleeve. It was funny watching my training partners try to break my grip, and at the end giving up on breaking it :) This is a great piece of training equipment and I wish I had discovered this earlier!

Affiche A4 Kraken Challenge

What changes (positive and negative) have you noticed as a businessman in the world of grappling?

Changes? There are so many…To focus on Fightwear, many people have started to produce their shorts, kimonos, rashguards using Pakistan or China as manufacturers without knowing the environment and about textile products and flooding practitioners with poorly copied products without any innovations creating a negative image of Fightwear.
Our products are developed together with our athletes using products coming from sports such as rugby, American football … We do not copy, we seek to offer new cuts, textiles, stitching … In addition, our products are mainly manufactured in Portugal for reasons of quality.

How do you see your business in 5 years? 10 years?

In 5 years? We want to focus on the next year and then grow organically.

Mata Leon Kimonos really made a breakthrough this year with their great TV BJJ commercial which was a worldwide hit with over 314,000 views on youtube. We had previously reviewed their first Gi “The Gentleman” and loved it. Mata Leon are the sponsors of Turkish BJJ/ MMA fighter Ertan Balaban. I was contacted by Emre, the owner of Mata Leon, and they sent their new model: the Rudeboy gi. For the moment they offer 2 kimono models, white and blue. Emre sent me the blue “Rudeboy” model. It took about 5 days to arrive from Turkey to Serbia where I live. The first impression that I had when looking and feeling the gi was that this was different from the previous model. This gi has a lot of great details and features which most gis don’t have. It feels slightly heavier than the ultra light gentleman gi, and the material is top notch. The blue color was a great quality royal blue. It really is a beautiful gi to look at.

This is the strong point of this gi: it looks great. The blue and grey lining looks very classy. The Mata Leon letters letters on the shoulders reminds me of Atama Mundial model. Looks great.

BJJEE Reviews: Atama New Light Kimono

Translated from our friends from the French Gi Review website GiTaste.fr

Atama ! THE brand that sets the standard for BJJ kimonos … they have been around for a long time and their Mundial line of models is in its umpteenth version . Just when you thaught that were going through the motions and not coming out with anything exciting, comes their new kid on the block, 1.5 kg for A2 size, the New Light  !

Atama is one of the famous BJJ brands.I got in touch with Atama Europe and we managed to get along for the review of New Light model. I’d like to thank BJJ black belt Pedro Barcellos for making it possible.

The Atama New Light is as its name suggests, the lightweight model in the range , although it is heavier than a 100% ripstop like the Kauai, the Atama at least has the merit of being consistent with IBJJF rules and therefore to be accepted in all competitions.

new-light-azul-direita

Look

As always with Atama gi is available in three colors (white, blue and black), I hesitated a long time before choosing, and I finally chose the blue, for no particular reason!

You won’t find any flashy bling gis at Atama and New Light is no exception to the rule. The gi is very simple but for the occasion Atama has revised its patches and they are really beautiful !

The jacket is patched at the shoulders, along the neck , plus a small patch in the upper back. The shoulder patches are very aesthetic , but with the logo Atama on red background with golden letter in the word “master in kimonos” (in Portuguese) . We find this little touch of gold on all other patches, a real success, these are the patches that you will not want to remove!

For the rest of the jacket, there are no frills, no stitches are mixed, no custom backing band (except the back of the sleeves).

The pants are ripstop classic, but with the same type of patches as on the jacket. Apart from that nothing much remarkable, the pants are very basic.

new-light-azul-detalhe

Weaving and reinforcements

To be a light jacket, it could only be in single weave , and although on Atama’s site, they don’t say, it is without a doubt 450 gsm , which gives us a size A2 a weight of just over a kilo. Nothing unusual there , it is in the average weight jackets for a single weave . The reinforcements are more classic (underarm slits of jacket, back) all with triple stitched seams as it should be. You don’t really get the impression of softness of fabric but in return we feel that the material is strong. There was no compromise for the strength of the gi to make it lighter. The collar is made of rubber and is covered with rips top material .

The pants are of course in ripstop , for the rest it is the bare minimum, only two loops to attach the pants, a small strip of fabric as a belt, reinforced knees all like the crotch.  The finishes pants are spotless.

atama

Size and fit

As usual I took a A2, upon receipt of the gi and during the first fitting I noticed that kimono was fitting smaller than average, particularly in regards to the length of the pants (94 cm) but not to fear about shrinking because it’s a ripstop, so they slightly expand .

The jacket is the right size for me, it’s comfortable and does not hinder movement, it does not shrink at the skirt is not too wide at the sleeves. As always I advise you to refer to the size chart, as for the New Light in A2 the gi size was slightly smaller than average.

Rolling

The New Light is super nice , although the pants are a bit short for my taste. It should be even better during periods of high temperatures because of its lightness .

The pants are good, we have no need to constantly strengthen and at the end of the session the knot comes undone without problems. The jacket also stays in place regardless of the movements made.

0003GT_Pres_Atama_New_Light

Conclusion

The Atama New Light is a success. We can really see the know-how ‘of Atama . In the lightweight gis category, it is placed among the firsts (outside of 100% ripstop gis), with 1500 gr it can avoid setbacks for some competitors who are at the limit in their weight class .

Available on Atama Europe for 155 € (145 € in white, excluding postage) this gi is in the upper range, to that price to have in her wardrobe a little gi is almost luxury , but it can all quite do the trick as your main gi.

The very popular Hyperfly Gi from DoorDie. This test is really one of those that I was the most excited about as DoorDie sponsors my favorite BJJ player Xande Ribeiro. Available at DoorDie Europe

A LITTLE HISTORY on DoOrDie

Do Or Die is an American company based in San Diego. They produce BJJ and grappling products including the famous Hyperfly. They are sponsoring athletes of all ages and all levels including the superstar of BJJ: Xande Ribeiro.

Xande_Ribeiro_HYPERFLY

This test was conducted with the support of their DoorDie Europe managed by Mr. Harmen from the Netherlands. Do Or Die site: contact@doordieeurope.com / www.doordieeurope.com

DESIGN:

The Hyperfly is truly stylish. Remaining faithful to Japanese traditions, Hyperfly redesigns Jiu Jitsu gis for the next generation of athletes.

The fabric is at the same time very light and very strong (even being the strongest in the world according to the creators of Do Or Die). 2 cool patches on the level of the triceps make up the jacket with blue colors. The seams are black and they contribute to giving a great effect to the kimono.

The pants are 120z cotton which is very light with an innovation at the crotch area which allows better ventilation.

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

A patch on the right leg with a full writting of HYPERFLY will give an eyeful to your partners.

JACKET:

The kimono comes in a beautiful small nylon bag in the colors of DO OR DIE. : Really the best effect and very convenient for storage. The jacket comes with 2 HYPERFLY patches on the sleeves and a small square logo behind the neck, the back remains simple and without patches …The triple stitching on the jacket is particularly effective to strengthen the whole assembly. The white and black contrast stitching is superb: the sleeves are covered with a black ribbon as is the tip of the skirt. The seams are on-the colors of DO OR DIE. Inside the jacket, there is the famous logo: YOU CAN’T TEACH HEART. The neck is classic cotton and reinforced with an EVA form.

PANTS

Like the jacket, the pants are of great quality and are light. They are 12 oz with a beautiful black rope and 6 loops allow a perfect fit. The cut is fitted without being too tight. Great HYPERFLY patch on the right side and HYPERFLY logo embroidered on the left side only improve the design of the pants.  A real innovation is this piece of lycra located in the crotch to improve breathability. All seams are tripled and well reinforced. Special mention to the knees, particularly reinforced for the occasion.

SIZE:

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

I measure 177cm and weigh 68 kgs, so the A2 size fits perfectly, the cut is great and I place in the top three with Grips and Manto.

WASHING:

The quality of the cotton used allows minimal shrinkage: 0.5 cm narrowing at the sleeves and skirt. The cut is adjusted which means that the jacket is not curved but adjusts to your body after washing. Same rules as for my other tests, I do not recommend the dryer unless your kimono is too big for you and for only a few washes ….For my part, four washes at 30 degrees and the cut didn’t shrink … Drying in the open air is advisable to maximize the life of your gi. Note that the kimono is not preshrunk.

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

IMPRESSIONS:

Apart from the fact that Xande Ribeiro is my favorite BJJ player, and is also a sponsored athlete of DO OR DIE, I never get tired of this kimono: this test only confirms my idea the brand and the kimono. The mesh is considered the world’s strongest while still being light. The kimono is super light and I felt immediately at ease by trying it for the first time. No problem for mobility and the slim fit is for me the best cut: it leaves little room for your opponent to grab while giving some comfort to the user.

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

After 3 weeks of rolling, no seams have cracked and the gi resisted the pressure of my training partners (and God knows there are tough guys at Cercle Tissier in Paris). The real innovation is, with this piece of lycra located in the crotch. Highly scalable and flexible, it is a real plus for this kimono to improve air evacuation after intense sessions. 6 loops are also handy to tie the pants around your waist.

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

Many training partners have come to me for this model and to ask me the price and the purchase site. All were impressed by the design of kimono and brand awareness. I recommend it 100% if you want to compete as if you want to buy a kimono with a stunning style for everyday use.

PRICE:

A reasonable price at 136, 50 Euros for the white version of the kimono. Expect a few euros more for the black and blue as well as California (white) and New York versions (2 blue available: classic dark blue and Navy).

Delivery is available across Europe.

http://www.doordieeurope.com/shop-2/do-or-diehyperfly-bjj-gi-white/

Good points:

The fabric is exceptional and very light, this is a big point, especially if you are used to being below in open guard work. This Hyperfly fabric is described as un-tearable, I can not guarantee that to you but I guarantee you that the weight / resistance ratio is high. The crotch has an innovation with the addition of lycra which allows better management and real breathability. Obviously, the logo “YOU CAN’T TEACH HEART” located inside the jacket comes out when opening of the kimono.

Kimono Jiu Jitsu DoOrDie - the Premium Hyperfly

CONCLUSION:

One of my favorite Gis and possibly my favorite. I love the messages that the brand brings such as respect and effort and the athletes representing the brand. This kimono has many innovations and will allow you to really feel comfortable. It’s a stunning model for competition coupled with a design up to the best modern standards. A must have in your collection of kimonos: DO OR DIE – YOU CAN’T TEACH HEART

Kraken Gi Review By 2007 IBJJF World Champ Laurence Cousin Fouillat

Laurence

Laurence Cousin Fouillat from France is the only European (Male or Female) to ever win a IBJJF world championship at the adult black belt level (in 2007)! I had the privilege to roll with her a few times, and her Jiu-Jitsu is flawless. She wrote a gi review for BJJ Eastern Europe of the Kraken Kimono:

By Laurence Cousin Fouillat

The Kraken kimono: I started wearing it a year ago and have been training every day in them (I have 3 Kraken Gis, two whites and a blue) to teach my classes or to train and I am more than satisfied!
I measure 1m62 for 55 kg and I wear A0.

1

Just for the look, aesthetically, it quite is simple, not too gaudy without patches everywhere.
Kraken have chosen embroidered logos to brand the gi. The Kraken embroidered logo is in black and red writing.
After one year, the embroideries were not damaged!

When I tried the Gi the first time, it was a perfectly adjusted fit. My students, who went from a adidas judogi which is very wide, to the fitted Kraken gi were amazed with how the gi fitted so well. For me, I went from a Venum to a Kraken so it wasn’t a big change.

2

The Gi is light and is perfect for competitors cutting weight, when training in hot weather, and has fast drying time in the winter.
I wear the pants low waisted and unlike other kimonos, this is the only brand that does not make saddlebags pants (a girly comment Lol).
Also, when I tighten the cord, it doesn’t fold in the back which is less annoying especially when you spend more than half of your time on the back!

The jacket:

Made from 1 piece of fabric (no seam in the back) for strength, comfort and durability.  Thick and soft collar made with 1 piece of vulcanized rubber inside. This helps keep this BJJ gi light (doesn’t get soaked with sweat), allows the gi to dry faster and does not allow bacteria and fungus to remain inside the collar.

3

Pants:

Fully ripstop pants, bent enough also. 4-Belt Loop system . Full length reinforced knees. Triple stitch reinforced joins. The drawstring is also ripstop and not too long for a kimono A0 size. My blue kimono has two seams at the bottom of each loop for better resistance unlike my two white kimonos. I recommend two seams which is stronger (personally) At the knees, reinforced ripstop (twofold tissue) and this to the bottom of the pants. At the crotch, two triangles (front and back) to reinforce the seams.

As a reminder, there are just two embroideries located below the left knee and the right, which leaves a lot of room for those wishing to sew patches of academies and sponsors. It is possible to buy separate sized jacket and pants. This is a great plus when we know that not everybody has standard dimensions.

Overall, the kimono has slightly shrunk after washing but nothing much. In my opinion it is even better like that I think.
Additional information for competitors, The kimono dimensions are IBJJF approved.

Another plus: The gi comes with its own black gi bag with orange embroidery and orange cord clamping, which is just beautiful!

4

Price is 172 euros, which in my opinion is not much for a gi of such quality. Usually similar quality gis are sold for more than 200 dollars. You can order here: http://www.krakenwear.com/boutique/

BJJEE Gi Review: Valor Victory Premium Lightweight Gi

DSC03886

valorValor fightwear is a British company with a great selection of BJJ Gis at excellent prices. They sent us their newest Gi, the “Victory Premium Lightweight” to try out. I own a really big number of Gis and to be honest I don’t really have any real preference for certain designs or types of gis. For me, diversity is good since wearing the same type of gi all the time can get boring.

I wore this Gi non stop for 4 weeks while training and even brought it with me on vacation in Spain as it was my lightest gi, and trained with it there. The first thing that impressed was the design and the look as well as by the the light weight of the Gi. The Victory comes in white, royal blue, black, dark blue and even a very original grey color!

Sizing:

Height Weight Size
5’2-5’8 55-70 Kilo A1
5’9-5’11 71-86 Kilo A2

Specs:

Rip Stop Covered Rubberised Lapel

8oz Canvass Cotton Trousers
4 Drawstring Loops to keep the drawstring in the correct position and to stop it moving around
Super Thick Duo Layer Rope Drawstring

Weight for the A3: 1,7 kilos

DSC03893

Sizing and shrinking:

I’m 1m86 and 87 kilos and the A3 fit me almost perfectly out of the box. The gi has natural shrinkage rate of approx. 3-5% after washing in warm/hot water.Washing in hot water can be used to shrink the GI and adjust it to your body type. Wash cold only if you are satisfied with the fit.

I washed the gi at 30 degrees everyday for the 4 week period and it shrunk just a little by becoming tighter. The sleeves stayed the same which is important for passing IBJJF regulations.

Material, cut and durability:

The Victory has a 450 gsm (gram per sq meter) pearl weave top which makes it at the same time light weight, comfortable and durable. The cut is tight fitting, which I personally prefer. The jacket is reinforced at all stress points, shoulders and back, arm pits, side vents, everything with triple stitching. The collar is made of EVA foam with rip stop.

The Pants are made from 8oz canvass cotton with reinforced knees and feature contrast stitching, drawstring loops and Drawstring. The coolest part of the gi is the drawstring which is my opinion the BEST drawstring I’ve seen on a go so far. It is a duo layer rope drawstring. Its twice as thick as most other rope drawstrings and features a canvass cotton outer layer and a thick slightly elasticated inner core

Look:

In my opinion the design is very cool and original. There are just enough embroideries and patches. The round arm DSC03898embroideries remind me a bit of the Shoyoroll .The contrast white stitching is a nice touch. I like the small victory inscription on the gi skirt too. The design is really a big plus of this gi.

Feeling when rolling:

The gi is very nice to roll in and is really light. It was was my go to gi this summer because of the heat. It also makes for a great gi for competition if you are near the weight limit. The jacket is solid and made to last under constant pulling and tugging. The canvas pants are comfortable. The gi is a perfect compromise between light and solid.

In Conclusion

The Victory gi retails for 90 € on Valorfightwear.com which makes it a great bargain for such a well made gi. I have seen Gis of the same quality priced at 150 euros…Valor fightwear really deserves the recognition since they are a quality company that produce Gis at a great value for your money.

BJJEE Gi Review: Dokebi Bros, Balance Gi

 dokebi

Dokebi Bros is a European/Korean Gi company and one of the rare BJJ Gi manufacturers from Korea. I was contacted by the owners of Dokebi Bros, and they sent me a gi to try out. I was really excited to try it out as it was the first gi that I would roll in that came was made in Korea. I was expecting quality. They sent me their white ‘Balance Gi’. It took about 5 days to arrive to Serbia where I live.

Here are the specs:SAMSUNG

Single Weave 100% cotton
450 G/SM
Embroidered patches on the top and pants
Heavy-duty cotton twill pants
Flat cord drawstring closure system
Reinforced knees
Made in South Korea, fully IBJJF legal
Weight for the A3: 1,95 kgs

SAMSUNG

Sizing and shrinking:

I’m 1m85, 86 kilos so I ordered the A3 size. When the gi arrived and I tried it on it was just a bit oversize so I washed it a couple of times at 60 degrees to make it fit my body. It shrank about 5%, to eventually perfectly fit. After about 4 weeks of training everyday in the gi, there wasn’t any further shrinking. The cut is slightly larger than most slim fitting gis, which is a nice change from what is on offer these days.

Material and durability:

The jacket is made from high quality cotton, and is very strong. You can tell that this gi is ideal for the roughness of everyday training.
The Heavy-duty cotton twill pants have reinforced knees, and will last a lifetime.
This gi is loaded with reinforcements at the key stress areas. There is a flat drawstring and two belt loops which is reminiscent of the too old-school gis.

SAMSUNG

SAMSUNG

Look:
The thing I like the most with this gi is the simple design. The metallic grey embroidery and Korean letters look really cool. It’s proof that less is more. It isn’t a ‘bling’ gi but still sticks out from other more common gis.

Feeling when rolling:
Training: I wore the kimono every day for a month. The gi is very comfortable to roll in. At 1,95 kilos for a A3, it’s a medium weight BJJ gi. It’s great for everyday rolling and for competition.

In Conclusion:
The “Balance” gi retails at around 129 euros which places it in the mid price range for gis. It is a great quality gi with durable pants and simple and classy design. Looking forward to see the new black gi from Dokebi Bros.

Review: Saulo & Xande Ribeiro’s BJJ Library, Online Training Program

xande_saulo_ribeiro

By Guillaume “Gile” Huni

When it comes to supplementing my game with online or video instruction, I’m very picky about what I will look at. Youtube seems to have an answer to a lot of our daily BJJ problems: “how to pass the Z guard” for ex, but what I don’t like in most instructionals is the lack of conveying the concepts of a technique and strategy. Back when I was a blue belt, I purchased Saulo Ribeiro’s Jiu-Jitsu revolution 1&2 dvd set (which is considered one of the best of all time by the way) and instantly fell in love with the way that Saulo was teaching Jiu-Jitsu. Instead of just randomly picking a bunch of fancy low percentage moves, he would focus on basic, solid, competition proven techniques and break them down showing you all the important details and the right strategy to use in a competition setting.

lib

When Dave from BJJ library contacted me a few months back and offered me a subscription to Saulo and Xande’s new online training program BJJ Library, I was over the moon. It was always one of dreams to one day train at the University of Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego. My instructor had trained there with his son in the past and told me about Saulo’s awesome way of leading the trainings.

In a really easy to navigate site, BJJ Library gives you access to the daily classes at Saulo’s University of Jiu-Jitsu, lib1Xande’s academy in LA, and Rodrigo Pagani’s school in Niteroi Brazil. You basically get to experience the same instruction that their own student’s receive on a daily basis.

One more great thing is that they also feature guest seminars from the biggest BJJ players like Leandro Lo (showing his torreada pass, and spider guard), Fernando Terere (Safada throw, buttflop pass), Rafael Lovato Jr (Smash passing), Clark Gracie (his handsome omoplata).

There are also great rolling sessions between Saulo, Xande with Clark Gracie, Leandro Lo etc..Xande’s Judo Randoris at his judo club. For those who look for self defense, there is also a Jiu-Jitsu self defense section. For those who like ginastica natural, they’ve uploaded a detailed section with ginastica warm ups and exercises.

As a BJJ nerd and recent BJJ black belt, I spend ALOT of time watching tournament matches of my favorite BJJ players to pick up some new ideas. I’ve recently started teaching class once a week and a lot of what I’m showing uses details, concepts and strategies that I’ve learned watching BJJ Library. So for me it is a really valuable tool that will help me evolve in my BJJ journey.

Dog

DOGUERA is a new clothing brand dedicated to modern martial arts, born from the passion of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA.
The animal symbolizing the brand-name is the olive baboon (Papio Anubis) which combines flexibility, strength and agility, but if necessary can be particularly aggressive and pugnacious.
Its name has its roots in Egyptian mythology and the god “Anubis.”
The semantics of DOGUERA merge ideas and strong values: “Do” for “The way”, “Guera” for war .
This passion comes from the desire to provide innovative designs and flawless manufacturing quality. Become an ambassador for our brand, become a DOGUERA. “

doguera

The words and images that come to my mind when I think of a baboon are: agility, aggressiveness, and strength. All components of a BJJ fighter. When the guys from Doguera contact me and sent me their Arte suave model gi. I was more than happy to test it out.

The Arte suave comes in royal blue (like mine), Navy blue and black.

Here are the specs:

450g Pearl weave jacket (ideal compromise for everyday training and competition for every month of the year)
The collar is made of EVA foam which is fast drying & antibacterial, covered in quality fabric, that ensures strength and durability.
100% cotton pants 10.5 oz (6 loops of cord for a better fit around the waist, thick round cord for comfort)
High quality embroidery with the baboon logo on both shoulders as well as the left breast. You also received a fully embroidered 30cm ² patch for free.
Reinforcements and triple stitching in strategic locations that reinforce the strength of the Gi.

Sizing:

  • A1    50kg-68kg/110-150 lbs     160cm-170cm/ 5’3″-5’7″
  • A1L   68kg-75kg/ 150-165         167cm-175cm/ 5’6-5’9″
  • A2    75kg-86kg/ 165-190        175cm-180cm/ 5’6″-5’11″
  • A2L   75kg-88kg/ 165-195       180cm-190cm/ 5’11″-6’3″
  • A3    86kg-102kg/ 190-225       180cm-188cm/ 5’11″-6’2″
  • A3L   88kg-104kg/ 195-230      188cm-193cm/ 6’2″-6’4″
  • A4   102kg-111kg/ 225-245     182cm-193cm/ 6’0″-6’4″
  • A5   111kg-122kg/ 245-270      188cm-200cm/ 6’2″-6’7″

This one of the only gi brands that offer sizing in between sizes which is great for those that are for ex between a A3 and A2.

SAMSUNGSizing: The Arte Suave gi came in at almost the right size when I received it. I washed the gi at 30 degrees to not shrink shrink too much. I usually use A3 in other brands and I’m 1m85 and 86 kilos. This gi was an A2L which according to the above size would be perfect. After the first wash, the gi fit me exactly how I wanted it. The Arte suave gi have a more tailored fit on me but without feeling too constricting.

Material and durability: The Gi top is Pearl weave and you feel that a lot of work and gi making experience has been put into this model. Everything is double and triple stitched. The material is top class, and the embroidery is very well done. I have rarely seen a gi with such good craftsmanship. The collar is more than averagely thick. This is a durable gi made for everyday training. It weighs around 1,9 kilos at A2L. This feels like it will last a lifetime of rugged training.

Look: I think Doguera did an excellent job in designing this gi. This one for sure looks the sharpest with the classy customized Brazilian flag embroidery and cool shoulder patches. The first thing you’ll notice is how simple but sharp this gi looks. The gi is not too patched up and not too flashy, in my opinion it has been done with a lot of good taste.

SAMSUNG

Feeling when rolling: As a A2L, the gi weighs weighs in at 1.9 kilos. The gi is really comfortable and the thick collar will help you out in defending collar chokes. It is suitable for hot or cold weather rolling.

So in my personal opinion I would give this gi a 9,5/10 rating in terms of satisfaction. I really enjoy rolling in it and it looks great too!
The plus points for me are the fit, the high quality, the classy embroidery and design. It is of course very comfortable to wear. The gi retails at 139,9 euros at Unlimited fightwear

When Rio De Janeiro was awarded the organization of the 2016 Olympics the BJJ got all excited with hope that our sport would be included in the Olympics.

Ronin Brand, is a top of the line BJJ brand that comes from the United States and imagined what might have been the uniform for BJJ players. They came out with: The Ronin Games Rio 2016 provided by Unlimited Fightwear .

The concept of the gi is inspired by the Rio Olympic colors and those of Brazil, which makes it a pretty colorful gi.

weight for the A2L: 1,9 kilos.

Jacket & Pants

The jacket is made of great quality cotton. The pearl weave jacket is 450 gsm, which is in my opinion the ideal gi weaving for BJJ, it makes it light, soft and comfortable to wear. But lightness does not mean weakness, it is of course reinforced at all areas subject to strain during training and competitions: Armpits, back slit skirt and cuffs. There are some quality embroidery.

ronindetail.jpg

Pants have the famous Olympic triangles and another patch in the colors of Brazil, very nice and in great detail. And finally a small embroidery “Rio 2016″ on the right shin. The knees are reinforced.

Conclusion

This git is lightweight, perfectly cut and offers more intermediate sizes (A1L-A2L etc …), the finishes are excellent and the strength of the whole is undeniable! The design is the biggest plus point. It’s a good looking gi. Available for 149 euros at Unlimited Fightwear a price that is justified by the quality of the workmanship and the presence of many embroidery.

gawakoto

This new limited edition Kabuki Kimo-Noh is a collaborative effort between Gawakoto & comic book artist and writer David Mack.

Gawakoto is a rising brand of really well designed and original fightwear which includes rashguards, grappling tights, shorts, t-shirts and kimonos. The mastermind of Gawakoto is Bong Abad a British/Filipino BJJ player and self-confessed comic book geek based in the UK. Gawakoto creations are heavily influenced by Bong’s passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and the Filipino Martial Art, Kali. He values and takes pride in his Filipino heritage, which is reflected in his designs. “Gawa ko ‘to” – a seemingly ordinary Filipino sentence means, “I made this”.

This Kabuki Kimo-Noh is a collaborative effort between Gawakoto & David Mack. David Mack is a New York Times best-selling author of Kabuki. His original comic book creation ‘Kabuki’ has been translated into several languages and has been nominated for (and won) several prestigious awards including The International Eagle Award, Eisner, Harvey & Kirby Awards.

I was looking for a lightweight gi with a simple but also original design. Bong sent me the Kabuki gi, and I was really satisfied with the great service he provided me. The gi arrived at my doorstep surprisingly fast, despite living in Serbia and Gawakoto headquarters being in the UK.

GI WEIGHT (in kg) for an A3: 1,5 kgs

Sizing:
The first thing I noticed when I received the gi was how light it was (1,5 kgs for a A3) and also the nice embroidery on the gi. This would be great for competition when I would be near the weight limit. The gi came in at almost the right size. I just needed to shrink it a bit to fit me perfectly. The pants were also slightly bigger (which is normal). I washed the gi twice at 40 degrees and it shrink a bit just to a perfect size. I am 1m86 , 86kgs for an A3. The cut is slim fit.

6

Material and durability:

The jacket is made of Pearl Weave and a one piece design. Although the gi is very light, it is much stronger than what it seams. I as always, I put the gi to the test training with my Eastern European heavyweight training partners and it was fine!
The skirt of the jacket in size feels great , not too short and not too long.
The pants were also also fine and durable.

After 3 weeks of rolling everyday in the gi, it has held up very well to tough gripping of my partners. This gi is built to last and will do great in training and competition.

3

Look:
The thing I like about this gi is the combination of the simple/traditional and originality . The big dragon on the back looks really cool. Everybody a the academy asked me about the gi :)

Feeling when rolling:
The gi is very comfortable to roll in and I will especially enjoy this one in the summer when temperatures will hit the mid 30′s.

inside

In Conclusion
The kabuki is a combination of high quality and great design. It retails at 120 Pounds or 142 euros on the Gawakoto site which places in the mid price range for BJJ gis.
I would give the Kabuki a Mark of 9/10

Pros

-High quality, light but strong fabric
-Strong stitching

Cons
- The gi is slim cut/fit. I personally prefer looser gis, but that’s just a personal preference.

valor close

Valor is a British company with a great selection of BJJ Gis at truly excellent prices. They sent us their newest Gi, the “Carioca” to try out. I already own the Valor Victory Gi and it ranks among my all time favorite Gis.

I wore this Gi non stop for 4 weeks. The first thing that impressed was the really cool design with the orange stitching and embroidery as well as the light weight of the Gi. The Carioca comes in white and royal blue.

Sizing and shrinking:

I’m 1m86 and 90 kilos and the A3 fit me almost perfectly out of the box.

Jacket & pants:

The GI jacket is has a tailored cut so it fits closer to the body giving it a better fit than most standard GIs. It features contrast stitching, stylish Valor patches and embroideries and a Rip Stop covered rubberised lapel.

The Pants are made from 10oz cotton and feature contrast stitching, drawstring loops and Drawstring. The Drawstring is rope type. Its twice as thick as most other drawstrings and has a thick elasticated inner core. These are the best drawstrings on any GI we have seen!

Look:

The design is really cool. There are just enough embroideries and patches. The round arm embroideries remind me a bit of the Shoyoroll .The contrast orange stitching is original and refreshing. The design is really a big plus of this gi.

Feeling when rolling:

The Valor Carioca is really comfortable to train in. The gi is a perfect compromise between light and solid.

In Conclusion

The Valor Carioca gi retails for 79,99 GBP or 95 € on Valorfightwear.com which makes it a great bargain for such a well made gi. I have seen Gis of the same quality priced at up to 200 euros…One of the best Gis I’ve ever worn for sure.

DOGUERA is a up and coming BJJ lifestyle brand that produces great quality and cool designed BJJ gis.

The symbol of Dogera is the baboon. The words and images that come to my mind when I think of a baboon are: agility, aggressiveness, and strength. All components of a BJJ fighter. I already have a their previous model, the ‘Arte Suave’ which I use for competition. When the guys from Doguera sent me their new model the “Elementar” gi, I was more than happy to test it out. The price is great at 89,9 euros at Unlimited Fightwear

The Elementar comes in three colors (white, blue and black) available on the website Unlimited Fightwear . The design is simpler than the first model with less patches. It is IBJJF approved.

Weight of the Gi at A3: 1,65 kilos.

DOG

Here are the specs:

Sizing and shrinking: The Arte Suave gi came in at almost the right size when I received it. I washed the gi at 30 degrees to not shrink shrink too much. I got a A3 and I’m 1m86 and 90 kilos. After the first wash, the gi fit me exactly how I wanted it. The cut is not slim fit, it’s something like a regular fit.

belt

Material and durability: The Gi top material is top class. It is very light and very soft. The collar is more than averagely thick. The pants are 8oz cotton. Light but reinforced around the knees. This is a light but durable gi which is perfect for summer months and when you are close to weight for a competition. I had no problem with this gi during the 1 month of training with my heavyweight training partners.

Look: This is a simple and basic gi. It is not too patched up and not too flashy, in my opinion it has been done with a lot of good taste. The lime green color looks really good too. It’s the Rolls Royce of the entrance level Gis!

The shoulder patches

Feeling when rolling: The gi is really comfortable and enjoyable to roll with.

Conclusion: So in my personal opinion I would give this gi a 9/10 rating in terms of satisfaction. I really enjoy rolling in it and it looks great too!
The plus points for me are the price (89,9 euros at Unlimited Fightwear), the comfort, lightness and design.

‘The Black Belt Blueprint’ Or How Nicolas Gregoriades Got His BJJ Black Belt In 4 Years!

By Guillaume Huni

I’ve just finished reading Nicolas Gregoriades’s new book ‘The Black Belt Blueprint‘. Gregoriades is Roger Gracie’s first black belt. The book is about the system that he put in place when training, which allowed him to progress so fast in Jiu-Jitsu. I got my black belt in 12 years, so I was really curious to see what Nic did differently than me.

This isn’t your regular BJJ instructional book crammed with a bunch of positions and techniques, and some acrobatic submission moves.

The ‘Black belt blueprint‘ combines all the important issues that affect your progression in Jiu-Jitsu. It is a guide which applies to all grapplers coming from a very technical and spiritual BJJ player that understands the value of perfection of basics, small details that make a difference, nutrition, strength and conditioning, training mentality, breathing techniques, how to avoid overtraining and much much more.

Nic goes through the main position such as mount, backmount, sidecontrol etc.. and gives us pointers on the best ways to position your bodies from an attacking and defending position. While reading this, I had so many ‘Aha’ moments especially in the part for the mount. Nic is the student of the king of the mount choke, Roger Gracie, so those details on how to place your feet and legs, while in the mount, will come in very handy.

Nic also gets into other aspects of BJJ such as diet, competition, what type of gi to buy, breathing and awareness while on the mat, head control and movement, controlling angles, training with your eyes closed, how to avoid injuries, training in Brazil, warm ups and cool down.

Nicolas Gregoriades talks about his book:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmZC1vhlloo

Conclusion:

This is really the book that I should have read 12 years ago when I had started BJJ! Of course Nic says it himself that he was training 3 times a day and living for BJJ. But his method makes a lot of sense and can be applied by all from top competitors to part time BJJ players. I recommend this book to BJJ players of all levels. There is so much to learn from this book from the physical, mental and spiritual aspect.

Source: Translated from French from our friends at www.planetejjb.com (check them out)
