BJJEE Review: Odin IBJJF legal belt color rash guard

$

By Marcus Buur

Today a package arrived from Odin Fightwear. Inside was the new Odin IBJJF compliant, belt coloured rashguard. I decided to try it out down at the new Malmö Bjj-club Art of Roll.

Borrowing heavily on Norse mythology and operating out of Denmark, Odin Fightwear produces rashguards and shorts for grappling and MMA.

The rashguard I got was a brown coloured version. They also produce them in white, blue, purple and black. It felt solid and thick with reinforced seems and was slightly longer than my other rashguards. It had the Odin logotype on the front together with a stylised raven and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu written on the back.

Back side of the Odin Rashguard

I believe that a lot of thoughts went into this product and it is clear that fighters designed it for fighters. Rather than just a rashguard with a fighter print on it this rashguard has features like:

  • Seams around the armpit rather than through it. This will prevent potential irritation of the skin in the armpit and is not the standard on many rashguards.

  • No neck label. Having the neck label info printed on the shirt rather than having a small piece of fabric is smart because this way there is nothing to scratch or tickle your neck while rolling.

  • A rubber waistband. This rubber band will hold the rashguard in place and prevent it from curling up your waist while rolling.

  • Screen printed. This means that the print is part of the fabric and will not peel off while rolling or from washing. This can be compared to rubber print that will often peel off when rolling on a ruff mat.

  • Fully compliant with the IBJJF no gi grappling rules for rashguards. With this rashguard someone else did the homework for you and you don’t have to think about your rashguard being legal or not for an IBJJF event.

But in case you are wondering about the rules here is part of them:

“Shirt of elastic fabric (clings to body) at a length that covers the shorts’ waist band, of black or white color, and displaying at least 10% of the color of the rank (belt) to which the athlete belongs. Shirts that are 100% the color of the rank (belt) the athlete belongs to are also acceptable”

Not knowing the guy I was paired with at training and this being a submission wrestling training session, he did not know what belt I had. But he was either some kind of Sherlock Holmes or just knowledgeable of the new IBJJF grappling rules since he deduced right away that I was a brown belt from the colour of my rashguard. So I guess the design works as intended.

Now how did the rashguard perform and how did I like it?

Odin rubber band

Rubber waistband. Prevent the rashguard from curling up your waist while rolling.

I am 179cm and fight -82,3kg and the rashguard I got was in size L. This was a fine fit for me; long and tight. Where many rashguards tend to crawl up above my waste – making me look like the unwanted child of Britney Spears and a Yeti, this one stayed in place. I can’t say enough good things about that robber band… This was the feature I loved most about the whole thing; it felt like my rashguard was sown to my shorts.

The design of this rashguard radiated Bjj and grappling, rather than MMA and I found that refreshing. It is awesome to be able to represent Bjj.

I like and respect the passion that the Odin brand shows about their product. They felt that there wasn’t really a brand out there representing what they wanted so they decided to do there own. This idea of standard and quality really appeals to me. They set out to make a high quality IBJJF rule compliant rashguad for grappling competition and I think they did a damn fine job.

This is the best rashguard I ever had the pleasure of wearing. Really! Go get one I don’t think you will regret it!

BJJEE Review: Valor Victory No GI Range, Rashguard & Shorts

Valor is a British company with a great selection of BJJ Gis and No Gi wear at truly excellent prices and great quality.

Valor sponsors a range of top BJJ athletes such as Leo ‘Bomba’ Queiroz, Eduardo Goncalves, Eldar ‘Yakuza’ and many more…

They sent us their newest line of NO Gi wear, the “Victory” to try out. I already own the Valor Victory Gi and The Valor Carioca Gi and it they rank among my all time favorite Gis.

rash

Over the years, I’ve owned lots of rashguards from various brands. I’ve also rolled with compression shirts from Nike or Underarmour. Rash guards and compression shirts are not the same.  Typical compression shirts are made of 4 panels and are not designed for constant contact. As a result, the movements are restricted, and the shirt is more likely to ride up over your abdominal while rolling. Good rash guards are made from a minimum of 6 panels. The stitching is very durable and is built to resist sleeve pulls and stretching.

The rash guard is a staple in no-gi grappling but it’s benefits of use with the gi is often debated. Someone people feel less restricted without a rash guard, and absolutely refuse to wear one while rolling in the gi. I am of the belief that the benefits of wearing a rash guard whenever you are rolling far out weigh the freedom you feel without it.
There are several reasons why I advocate the use of a rash guard under the gi.

  • Muscle Compression may prevent injury.
  • Reduce the spread of bacteria.
  • Wick away moisture for better grips.
  • Prevents mat burn.

shorts1
The rashguard top I got was black, white and red. It felt solid and thick with reinforced seems and was slightly heavier and tougher than my other rashguards. The shorts had a similar design as the rashguard and also a strong silky feel. Both of these products were used 5x times a week during No Gi training. These are for sure products that wil last a very long time.
The design and top quality of the products shows that a lot of thought went into this.

The great thing is that both the rashguard and shorts have full sublimation printing so the design won’t peel, crack and will never come off.
Fully compliant with the IBJJF no gi grappling rules for rashguards and shorts.

I am 1m85 and 95 kgs and the rashguard I got was in size XL. This was a bit larger than what I’m use to as I prefer a tighter fit.

The shorts were size 34 (L) and were a perfect fit.

The rashguard retails at 35Pounds (42 euros) and the shorts at 25 pounds (30 euros) on valorfightwear.com

Conclusion

Both the rashguard and shorts are heavy duty gear that will last forever thanks to good quality and sublimation printing. 9/10

There Isn’t a Better App: The BJJ Video Vault

$

Given the world we live, which is so driven by technology, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that we seem to have a new app or DVD series everyday targeted towards Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners like these videos on Drilling.

While that’s not always a bad thing, it can cause some over-saturation and watered down products.

Recently, I got my hands on the BJJ Video Vault app, and after giving it a spin, I walked away very impressed.  For something that runs just $1, the content trumps the price.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Content Aplenty

Upon my first time launching the app on my iPhone, I was mightily impressed!  Right away, you’re greeted by the main screen, which is simple to use, and all you have to do is swipe down or up, and then click your desired tab.

On top of the usual content—facebook page, Twitter, ‘about us’, etc—the BJJ Video Vault provides some nice nuggets of wisdom that any grappler could find useful.

Under the ‘BJJ Video Vault’ tab lies an ocean of videos waiting to be watched!  With instructional videos for sweeps, techniques, passes, etc., you can also enjoy competition videos, as well as mini-documentary videos!  This is a nice change of pace, as they aren’t throwing just information at you.  Having various types of videos offers the subscriber a great opportunity to absorb various types of information.

vault

Not only do they offer various types of footage, but when I scrolled down to the bottom of the screen, I let out a “woah!” when I saw there was 72 pages worth of these videos!

If the abundance of video content isn’t enough, there are also menus where you can go to see reviews on their other various products, as well as BJJ Today, which offers a wider scope in the BJJ world, outside of just what happens on the mat.

I found this to be a nice touch for those looking to evolve and learn the sport and the culture in one.

Phone punch

Navigating & Using The Application’s Interface

As someone that is big into technology, I’m a stickler for having a nice organized app.  If you open something and it just feels clunky, chances are high that you’ll close it and go about your day, and likely even delete the app soon after.

With the BJJ Video Vault, I experienced no issues what so ever with their navigation and the user interface.  As I stated previously, everything is so nicely laid out on the main menu that it makes navigation a breeze.

After a quick swipe and a click of the screen, you’ll be at your desired location!  And with just one main screen, and one page per category, if you want to get back to the main menu to go elsewhere in the app, then you’ll find it easy and convenient to do so by simply clicking the icon in the top left screen to return to the previous page.

Top-to-bottom, this app was something I found useful almost instantly.  When I opened it, I originally did so with intentions to jump right into a review but found myself distracted with all of the amazing content that was provided!

For the $1 price tag, you might as well be committing robbery! Grab it hear on the Google Play Store OR here on iTunes!

BJJEE Gi Review: Wicked One ‘Samurai’&‘Gold’

By Martin Pružinec for BJJ Eastern Europe

Wicked One‘ is a French company focused on street-wear as well as on BJJ and MMA gear with a great selection of BJJ Gis. They sent us their newest Gis, the “ Kimono Samurai noir ” and 2 samples of “ Kimono Gold” to try out. I already own some Wicked One street-wear stuff and it belongs among my most favorite leisure time wear. That is why I was impatiently waiting for BJJ gear to have a chance to try it and share the view.

I and my team-mates rolled in these GIs non stop for one month.

There are two things that impressed us first –first one was that GIs have totally cool design – perhaps most distinguishing feature of GIs, with the white stitching and (Gold GI – golden, Samurai GI – grey) embroidery and at the same time it was the light weight of the GIs. The Gold comes in black and Samurai in black and white colors.

Second thing is of course the price – definitely reaches the price of high quality traditional gi producers.

Official statement of Wicked One:

Kimono Samurai noir

kimono-samourai-face

-          Jacket 100% cotton very strong double-weave, built in one piece, no seams in the back.
- 550g/m2
- Jacket fits snugly providing minimal input option to your opponent.
- Many reinforcements come solidify the jacket including the lateral level, underarm and upper back.
- Col very rigid and reinforced with high density rubber.
- Triple seams
- Reinforced Lightweight pants, 100% cotton, very durable rip-stop with reinforcements at the knees
- Woven label

(we have to add – there is thin very nice inside rashguard material with sublimation printing – very nice picture of Samurai )

Kimono Gold noir

Sizing and shrinking:

I am 1m 73, 85kilos (I took A2 Gold), BJJ friend of mine (Martin) is 1m 89 and 90kilos (he took A3 Samurai).   Gold fit me almost perfectly out of the box. The same applies to Samurai A3. The GIs have natural shrinkage rate of approx.3-6 % after washing in warm/hot water. Washing in hot water can be used to shrink the GI and adjust it to your body type, this is what we found very useful in the case of another BJJ roller slimmer than us (he uses Gold A2).  Wash cold only if you are satisfied with the fit. I washed the GI at 30 degrees everyday second day for the 4 week period and it shrunk just a little by becoming tighter. Martin did the same washing with the Samurai GI. In case of our other friend, he washed GI two times in 90 degrees and than 30 degrees. The GI got tighter precisely to his body. The sleeves have shrunk just a bit to fit even better.

Jacket & pants:

The GI jacket of both GIs have relatively loose cut and if I am to find any similarity it is Atama style ( pre-shrunk) or Moya brand ( shrinks)  for sure , in other words I would not recommend these GIs to very slim and skinny people – and basically majority of Eastern Europe  BJJ athletes are not slim and skinny J   . It features contrast stitching, very original Wicked One patches and embroideries and a strong rubberised lapel.

The pants are made from durable rip-stop material and feature contrast stitching, drawstring loops and drawstring. The drawstring is rope type.

Look:

The design is perhaps the most appealing feature of all Wicked One GIs!!! And also hand in hand with undoubted quality the design stands behind the commercial success of Wicked One GIs.  It immediately either catches your eye or you dislike it. If one looks for old fashioned GI or very moderate GI – it is not his choice. If one has the courage to try very progressive design with all aspects BJJ GI needs to have – it is definitely his choice. The main difference is in colors of embroidery and patches (i.e. golden, yellow etc.). There are just enough embroideries and patches. The contrast stitching is original and refreshing. The design is really a big plus of this gi.

Feeling when rolling:

Both types of GIs are very comfortable to train in (all three guys involved in trial agreed unanimously) Both types are very light (despite the fact they are not described as lightweight) but durable and solid.

In Conclusion

The Gold GI retails for 149 € and Samurai noir (black) (also in white) for 199 €  on wickedone.fr  which makes it relatively pricey, but for very well made GIs. Here comes the moment of decision – if one loves the revolutionary design or not. Definitely Wicked One Gis belong to the best GIs we ever rolled in.

Just my personal view, please do not take it too seriously: I myself love the design ( despite the fact a have a lot of traditional design GIs) and if I loose at the competition ( we do not ´loose´ we learn J ) I look classy and if I win I look classy even more J.

Just hope you find this review helpful

Overlooked & Undervalued: The Importance of Grip Strength For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

$

There are many things that get overlooked when it comes to being a good grappler.  One such thing is your grip strength.

There are plenty of ways to go about working on it, however, the most efficient way is by using the Finger Master.

However, before you know how it works, you have to know why it’s important.

How Grip Strength Can Benefit Your Game

Grip strength is something that you won’t hear stressed heavily when you enter your gym and begin training.  While this is understandable, we don’t normally give it much thought at the onset of our young grappling lives.

However, once you progress is imperative that you know just why grip strength is a tool that should be brought into your game!  Some of the many benefits turn out to be rather important when you look at the big picture.

For instance, if you compete in Gi based competitions, and then you rely heavily on being able to grip your opposition.  Having a Gi is a plus and a minus, because it allows you to be stalled and your attacks are rendered useless if your opponent is able to get a good grip on it.

Likewise, it can be used a useful tool that you can implement onto your opponent by stifling their progression, and bring the match to where you want it to be.

Also, it can help when you are looking to lock on submission holds late in the match.  As you compete longer, you obviously begin to sweat more, which in turn makes applying submission increasingly difficult.

The stronger your grip is, the more likely you are to get hold of the submission.  While it won’t eliminate the poor grip factor completely, it will certainly make it a little easier on you when you look to finish the match late in the round.

The Best Way To Enhance Grip Strength

As someone who is deeply involved in the fitness and sport science approach of athletics, there are plenty of ways you can go about enhancing your grip strength, making sure that you become a fearful grappler.

You could go to the gym, grab two towels, and bang out some pull-ups; this is a good way to improve your grip.  Or, you could also do a farmers carry which is when you take a heavy dumbbell in each hand and walk a certain distance.

While these two approaches work perfectly, they also do a number on your hands.

A much more proficient—and effective—way to improve your grip strength is by using the Finger Master.

Finger-Master

A simple tool, the finger master is designed to improve your gripping ability in the most efficient way possible.  By taking the device and placing it in your hand, you can push down on one of five triggers.

Each trigger is padded, making the actual pressing of the trigger an easy experience.  Once you begin to improve upon your grips, you can begin to enhance the resistance level by simply adjusting the knobs on each of the triggers, which can either add or take away the resistance you are using.

At the end of the day, it will not only get your grips stronger, but do less damage on your hands.

If you find yourself interested in the Grip Master, you can purchase it >>HERE!

BJJEE Gi Review: Kingz 420 Light V3 Kimono

If you want to be in the service of the king you got to wear the kings uniform. Kingz is the chosen armor of such esteemed knights as Andre Galvao, Xande Ribeiro, Roberto Cyborg and Hannette Staack. The people at Unlimited fightwear sent me a cool Kingz 420 Light V3 Kimono and now I have tested it in battle!

I went to my academy; MMA Alliance in Malmö, to try it out and here are my thoughts.

kingzmarcus

Marcus wearing the Kingz Kimono

The gi is light. Really light! It’s only 1,3 kg for an A2 and that’s perfect for competition where every gram matters. Made out of mixed materials, the top is cotton perl weave and the pants are synthetic ripstop. The gi I got is black with red trim on the jacket and Kingz patches on the shoulders, chest and logo embroidered in the neck. You can also get the gi in white and in blue. The design is simple, yet cool and I really like it. Its not too much but just right. The design leaves space for your team patches if you want to put them on.

The thing that really stands out after training in the gi were the pants. The pants fit very well, but more importantly, I did not have to adjust the strings that tie them. Normally on my other gis I will re-tie the strings of the pants a couple of times during a session but I did not have to do this at all wearing the Kingz pants.

Although I really like this gi the question is how much will I be training in it. From now on, my Koral light gis are getting replaced as competition gis with the kings own armor! Next time you see me competing I will be heavy in my light Kingz kimono. This kimono is my new competition gi!

Can Grappling Dummies Improve Your Overall Grappling Game?

$
0
0

In a sport such as Mixed Martial Arts or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, those who are serious competitors are always searching for a new edge to gain over their opponents by learning new moves or training techniques.

For a killer review on the training dummy we think is best for the job, jump on over and take a look see at the Submission Master!

In an ever evolving world, how can one get the upper hand on the next opponent they’ll meet?

One sure shot way to see your game grow by leaps and bounds is by training with a grappling dummy!

Slowing The Game Down To Your Own Speed

One of the major benefits I’ve noticed when it comes to training with a grappling dummy is the fact that you can slow the speed down to wherever you want it!

I’m sure we’ve all been in a position before where we hop on the mat, learn a new move and drill it.  However, there’s one or two things that we aren’t too sure abut and cause us to scratch our heads, but we don’t feel like being “that guy” and asking questions are the mercy of the rest of the class.

It’s normal.

Having your own grappling dummy eliminates this situation and allows you to learn however you want.  Imagine doing that same sequence but on a dummy.  Once you get to the part that is causing you trouble, you can hit the pause button and study where you are in relation to the dummy.

Where is your placed?  Are your hips in a strong position?  Is there any secondary options available?

All of these questions are things you can’t always answer in the heat of the moment, but being able to slow it down allows you to not only learn that specific sequence in-depth, but also develops your overall feel for the entire game.

Familiarizing Your Muscles With The Movements

Likewise, not only does it allow you to learn the moves and the intricacies of them all, but it allows your muscles to learn as well.  I’m sure by now we have all heard the term “muscle memory” at one point or another.

When you have the ability to drill on your own time—and as we determined, your own speed—you are giving your muscles time to adapt to the movements and strength over time.

Think back of the first time you had some serious trouble getting a specific sequence down pat.  Chances are the reason you had issues with it was because your coordination was off, or maybe your hips didn’t have proper range of motion.  No matter the reason, chances are it was something physically related that was causing the problem.

When this issue arises with a grappling dummy, you have the luxury of learning these moves over and over.  Even if you want to break it down into pieces, allowing your body to take on chunks of information at first, you can!

If you rather focus on a certain placement of the foot or escape with your hips rather than the entire sequence from start to finish, then a grappling dummy is ideal for you!

As something that does not only improve your actual grappling ability, but develops a specific set of foundational memory for your muscle groups, the grappling dummy is something that every grappler can stand to implement into their game.

‘Beyond Technique’: Or How To Learn Jiu-Jitsu More Effectively By Nic Gregoriades & Kit Dale

$
0
0

BJJ black belts Nic Gregoriades  and Kit Dale’s  Beyond Technique DVD series.
The title says it all. What they show us is much more than techniques. They show us more than just a random selection of techniques, concepts and details which make a huge difference in your game.

Who are Nic Gregoriades and Kit Dale?

Nic Gregoriades  is Roger Gracie’s first black belt. He is the author of the very popular book The Black Belt Blueprint  which is about the system that he put in place when training, which allowed him to progress so fast in Jiu-Jitsu (4 1/2 years to black belt under Roger Gracie).

Kit Dale is a Checkmat black belt. He was awarded his black belt in less than 5 years of training Jiu-Jitsu and has earned an impressive collection of medals along the way. He is one of a very select few non-Brazilian athletes to win the Brazilian Nationals, as the 2011 purple belt champion. In addition, Kit is a 2 x Jiu-Jitsu World Pro champion and 9x Australian National Champion. Australia has yet to produce a black belt world champion and Kit Dale could change that.

You’ve probably heard of Rickson Gracie’s ‘Invisible Jiu-Jitsu’ concepts. Well, in ‘Beyond Technique‘ Nic and Kit show us mat and competition tested concepts which are invisible to the naked eye but are highly effective in making a difference during a roll. These are the kind of concepts and details which can make your game evolve by leaps and bounds IF you follow them. While watching this DVD you will have some ‘Aha!’ moments when some of the concepts solve some of your problem areas.

I’m a BJJ black belt that has been training for 13 years, and I’ve learned more in this DVD than in any other BJJ instructional (and I’ve watched a lot). If it were up to me, all instructionals should be like this one. This is like the little tip that changes your whole game…

Both Kit and Nic got their black belts in under 5 years. Maybe one of the reasons for that (together with all the training ) is that they share a common belief that there should be more focus on concept based and creative Jiu-Jitsu than on constant drilling of techniques. This is a constant debate on the internet among BJJ nerds.

What I personally don’t like in most instructionals is the lack of conveying the concepts of a technique and strategy. ‘Beyond Technique’ breaks down  a BJJ concept and 2 techniques which apply to it, showing you all the important details and the right strategy to use in a competition or self defense setting.

bjjtakedowns-740x400

Kit Dale showing takedown concepts for BJJ

Beyond technique lasts 55 minutes, but doesn’t include all the time wasting slow motions and technique repetitions (you can always rewind for that).

They demonstrate 20 concepts. My personal favorites are the one where Kit shows how to nullify the pulling guard,  Nic’s pendulum concept and Kit’s way of dealing with different body types.

Transitional pressure
The Fisherman
The Quadrant
Post, Posture and Leverage
The Porcupine
Nullifying the guard pull
The Corkscrew
Weight distribution
Collapsing and inserting structures
Double-barrel shotgun
Open and closed chain
Removing leverage
Spinal torque
Size specific strategy
Border patrol
Loading the spring
The Pendulum
Take down postures
Hip-centric movement
Misdirection

The production quality is excellent and is well worth the investment.

BJJEE Gi Review: Dokebi Bros, Balance Gi

Dokebi Bros is a European/Korean Gi company and one of the rare BJJ Gi manufacturers from Korea. I was contacted by the owners of Dokebi Bros, and they sent me a gi to try out. I was really excited to try it out as it was the first gi that I would roll in that came was made in Korea. I was expecting quality. They sent me their white ‘Balance Gi’. It took about 5 days to arrive to Serbia where I live.

Here are the specs:SAMSUNG

Single Weave 100% cotton
450 G/SM
Embroidered patches on the top and pants
Heavy-duty cotton twill pants
Flat cord drawstring closure system
Reinforced knees
Made in South Korea, fully IBJJF legal
Weight for the A3: 1,95 kgs

SAMSUNG

Sizing and shrinking:

I’m 1m85, 86 kilos so I ordered the A3 size. When the gi arrived and I tried it on it was just a bit oversize so I washed it a couple of times at 60 degrees to make it fit my body. It shrank about 5%, to eventually perfectly fit. After about 4 weeks of training everyday in the gi, there wasn’t any further shrinking. The cut is slightly larger than most slim fitting gis, which is a nice change from what is on offer these days.

Material and durability:

The jacket is made from high quality cotton, and is very strong. You can tell that this gi is ideal for the roughness of everyday training.
The Heavy-duty cotton twill pants have reinforced knees, and will last a lifetime.
This gi is loaded with reinforcements at the key stress areas. There is a flat drawstring and two belt loops which is reminiscent of the too old-school gis.

SAMSUNG

SAMSUNG

Look:
The thing I like the most with this gi is the simple design. The metallic grey embroidery and Korean letters look really cool. It’s proof that less is more. It isn’t a ‘bling’ gi but still sticks out from other more common gis.

Feeling when rolling:
Training: I wore the kimono every day for a month. The gi is very comfortable to roll in. At 1,95 kilos for a A3, it’s a medium weight BJJ gi. It’s great for everyday rolling and for competition.

In Conclusion:
The “Balance” gi retails at around 129 euros which places it in the mid price range for gis. It is a great quality gi with durable pants and simple and classy design. Looking forward to see the new black gi from Dokebi Bros.

‘The Black Belt Blueprint’ Or How Nicolas Gregoriades Got His BJJ Black Belt In 4 Years!

$

By Guillaume Huni

I’ve just finished reading Nicolas Gregoriades’s new book ‘The Black Belt Blueprint‘. Gregoriades is Roger Gracie’s first black belt. The book is about the system that he put in place when training, which allowed him to progress so fast in Jiu-Jitsu. I got my black belt in 12 years, so I was really curious to see what Nic did differently than me.

This isn’t your regular BJJ instructional book crammed with a bunch of positions and techniques, and some acrobatic submission moves.

The ‘Black belt blueprint‘ combines all the important issues that affect your progression in Jiu-Jitsu. It is a guide which applies to all grapplers coming from a very technical and spiritual BJJ player that understands the value of perfection of basics, small details that make a difference, nutrition, strength and conditioning, training mentality, breathing techniques, how to avoid overtraining and much much more.

Nic goes through the main position such as mount, backmount, sidecontrol etc.. and gives us pointers on the best ways to position your bodies from an attacking and defending position. While reading this, I had so many ‘Aha’ moments especially in the part for the mount. Nic is the student of the king of the mount choke, Roger Gracie, so those details on how to place your feet and legs, while in the mount, will come in very handy.

Nic also gets into other aspects of BJJ such as diet, competition, what type of gi to buy, breathing and awareness while on the mat, head control and movement, controlling angles, training with your eyes closed, how to avoid injuries, training in Brazil, warm ups and cool down.

Nicolas Gregoriades talks about his book:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmZC1vhlloo

Conclusion:

This is really the book that I should have read 12 years ago when I had started BJJ! Of course Nic says it himself that he was training 3 times a day and living for BJJ. But his method makes a lot of sense and can be applied by all from top competitors to part time BJJ players. I recommend this book to BJJ players of all levels. There is so much to learn from this book from the physical, mental and spiritual aspect.

I’m 1m85, 86 kilos so I ordered the A3 size. When the gi arrived and I tried it on it was slightly bigger  so I washed it at 60 degrees Celsius to shrink fit it. Shrinkage is minimal if you follow the directions. After about 3 weeks of training almost everyday in the gi, it hasn’t shrank any further and perfectly fits me as you can see on the photo.

The jacket is made from high quality cotton. It feels light and is perfect for summer training. After 1 month of daily training with the Gi with my heavyweight training partners, the top has done very well with all the pulling and tugging. The lapel is medium thick.

This gi is loaded with reinforcements at the key stress areas.

Digital Grappling: The World’s First Grappling Simulation

Digital Grappling is the latest brainchild of Roger Gracie Black Belt Nicolas Gregoriades.

Gregoriades created it after being unable to find a suitable online tool for the grappling mind maps he used in his own training. for After nearly 2 years in development, the first version of Digital Grappling has been released.

2

“This is a project which I’ve spent hundreds of hours on and I’m very proud of it. To see something that was ony a small seed in my mind develop into a fully functioning like this is really satisfying, especially as there is nothing else out there like it.”  said Gregoriades.

Dubbed “The world’s first active jiu jitsu resource”, Digital Grappling differentiates itself from other instructional material by dynamically adjusting itself to the user’s input, allowing for a ‘virtual jiu jitsu simulation’.

1

According to Gregoriades “The game adapts to the player’s choices and has been built using my 15 years of grappling experience to make it an accurate approximation of a real bjj match. It’s the ideal resource for when you can’t actually make it to the mat.”

From the author Sam MCcoy:

“The book that I wrote is called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu abroad, and it is basically a brief guide to training in Brazil, The United States and the UAE. Now the reason I choose these three places is because Brazil is a Mecca of Jiu-jitsu, thats just where every thing comes from. We need to know our history, we need to know how to act if you decide to go there and train. The US because that’s where I am from and that is where I have gotten most of my experience. Additionally the UAE because in five to ten years I feel the UAE will be the Mecca of Jiu-jitsu, it’s just because they have the means, they have the ability and they have the desire to be the best and they are bringing the best coaches over here.”

Review: The BJJ Mental Coach’s 4 DVD Set ‘Inner Discovery for Outer Success’

$

“Competition is 90% Mental, and 10% Physical”

2 months ago, I was sent a copy of the BJJ Mental Coach‘s 4 set of DVDs: ‘Inner Discovery for Outer Success’. I’ll admit that I was a bit sceptical at first. For the past few years, I’ve been reading a lot of books on mental training for sports. So I thought that I had read everything that there was to hear on the subject. Well I was WRONG.

Mental training for BJJ is different than for other sports and  Gustavo Dantas, the BJJ Mental Coach, was able to use his world class experience as a BJJ instructor, instructor and academy owner and combine them with mental skills training & personal development that apply to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The BJJ Mental Coach Gustavo Dantas, is a fourth degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Andre Pederneiras. With nearly 20 years of coaching experience and being a World Class competitor, Gustavo is a Public Speaker as well as Certified Mental & Life Coach with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). Gustavo left Brazil in 1999 with a couple thousand dollars, two bags, and one teenage dream: to have his own 100% Jiu-Jitsu Academy and make his living through the passion of his life, Jiu-Jitsu. The Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established in Tempe, Arizona on March 6th, 2012, re-enforcing the statement, “Believe in yourself, believe in your dreams. Hard work pays off”.

Gustavo was the Jiu-Jitsu coach of the Mixed Martial Arts Gym, Arizona Combat Sports for eleven years, where he achieved his 2-0 MMA Record. During that time, Gustavo started the mission of promoting Jiu-Jitsu in the State of Arizona, becoming the vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and turning a small, 40 competitor, “in-house” tournament in 2001 to an impressive 700 competitors in 2011, helping Arizona to be recognised as one of the Jiu-Jitsu power houses in the United States.

I played the DVDs and listened to everything in one go. Everything he said made so much sense and I had few ‘Aha’ moments when he was talking about specific cases where negativity and self doubt was the main cause for failure in Jiu-Jitsu and in life.

mental coach

Inside this four-disc DVD set, you will hear about Fundamentals, Principles, and Techniques, including five tips that will help you discover what is holding you back from reaching your full potential.

After watching the DVD, I immediately made the following changes:

-Start setting precise goals and work towards them.

– Stop blaming others for my failures.

-Use imagery to visualize myself achieving those goals and having a feel good effect when thinking about them.

-Distance myself from negative people that instead of lift me up, just pull me down.

– Improve self confidence and adopt a more calm and peaceful demeanour.

A few things stuck out, when Gustavo talked about how in the past, when he was competing he was setting a personal goal of just winning the first match, and the rest was extra. He ended up losing the final because he was already happy to be in the final and didn’t believe in his abilities to win the gold. I had the exact same thing happen to me in 2012, when I competed at the IBJJF Europeans as a brown belt. I won my first two matches quite easily, and make it to the semi finals against a tough Swedish guy.I was already happy that I had won at least a bronze medal in such a prestigious so I had a mental crash and was just fighting on autopilot. I can still remember him cranking my arm in the Kimura and I just gave him that win, and was already thinking of celebrating my bronze medal with my team mates…That was pathetic as I didn’t even put up a fight. Well that is something that I will never let happen again. The only thought that goes in my mind now, is submitting my opponent in the final and believing that.

This has made me into a better BJJ instructor and working towards being a better competitor ( my next competition will be in 3 months time). Since receiving the black belt in 2013, I have had a miserable competition record of 9 losses for 1 win. After having had decent success at lower belts, I entered the shark infested waters of black belt, and the level went up by two notches. My last two matches have been much better though including a submission win, and I’m going to continue fighting. I love competing too much for having a string of losses to discourage me.

I like listening to Gustavo because he doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk. His wealth of experience is priceless. You can feel that when he talks, he has had a hard path in life and in Jiu-Jitsu. When he first came to the States in the 90’s, he had to work extremely hard to make a living teaching Jiu-Jitsu. He even had to resort to cleaning houses to make ends meet. He’s been through hard times but that has made him into the strong mental warrior that he is today. He is strong but you still feel that there is a sensitive side to him that he is battling with. I see this because I’m also battling my demons on the mat.

This DVD focuses on this:

– How to create breakthrough confidence for yourself so you can perform to the best of your ability.

– How to identify and handle the negative patterns that are holding you back from achieving the success you desire.

– How to manage your pre-competition anxiety and maintain higher levels of concentration during competition.

– How to stop negative self-talk, over-analyzing, over-thinking, and over-criticizing yourself and your performances.

– How to develop World Class mental toughness with proven results.

All of this doesn’t just apply to competitors, it applies to everybody involved in BJJ. Everybody who is trying to be the best they can be according to their limitations, commitment, time, and physical ability.

The DVD set retails at 97$ (the price of a Gi) and that is money well spent for something that WILL change your life for the better. You can buy the DVD here.

Moka Hardware is an up and coming BJJ manufacturer fron Denmark providing BJJ Gear (Gis, rashguard, Tshirts etc)
I was looking for a lightweight gi with a simple design (not too bling), but also very solid. Also I wanted to spend around 100 euros (retails at 107 euros) on a gi for a change.
I contacted Shimon Mochizuki from Moka and was really satisfied with the great service he provided me.
The Gi arrived at my doorstep surprisingly fast, despite living in Serbia.

GI WEIGHS (in kg): A3-1,9 kgs.
Sizing:

I’m 1m86 and about 85 kilos so I used the A3. The first thing I noticed when I received the gi was how light but it was (1,9 kgs for a A3).  The gi fitted me well but I wanted it to be a bit tighter. I personally like my gis to have a tight fit as I feel that I move better. So I washed the gi a few times at 40 degrees but it barely shrank. I then washed it twice at 90 degress and it sharnk just enough for me to have my desired fit. I was all set to roll in it! After 3 weeks of rolling non stop in the Gi, the size is the same.

moka gi
Material and durability:
The jacket is made of Pearl Weave and a one piece design, so fear of tearing is non-existent. The quality of the fabric is very similar to the higher priced Jiu Jitsu gis.
The skirt of the jacket in size feels great , not too short and not too long , much like the higher priced gi’s, the GI feels as high quality as the other gi manufacturers.
The pants  are also made of twill material, and very strong. The tie system of the pants uses 6 loops instead of the usual 2 or 3 loops, so the drawstring is sure to stay put. The fit of the pants are great in the seat and crotch area, they don’t fit snug but not too loose either, the fit of the pant legs do feel a bit long, but a few washes and the pant legs should come up a bit.
After 3 weeks of rolling everyday in the gi, it has held up very well to tough gripping of my partners. This gi is built to last and will do great in training and competition.
Look:
The thing I like about this gi is the simple and understated look. It has that Scandinavian understated design. If I want I can decorate it with various patches. I think it’s a nice classy low key gi with a cool design.
Feeling when rolling:

After washing it a few times at 90 degrees, I was able to shrink to my desired size. The gi is very comfortable to roll in especially now that it is to my size. I think that I will especially enjoy this one in the summer when temperatures will hit the mid 30’s.
In Conclusion
The Moka Hardware Simple Gi is fantastic value for money. It retails at 107 euros and to be honest, at that price, I have never seen a such good quality gi! If this gi had cost 160 euros I would not have been surprised to be honest.
The design is classy and the quality is great and I can see this gi lasting a long time.
I would give the Moka Simple Gi a Mark of 9/10.
Pros
-Great value for money.

-High quality strong fabric
-Strong stitching
– Stitched emblems
– Attractive styling
– Durable and light
– Strong Pearl Weave
Cons
-Didn’t exactly fit the way I wanted it the first time (It eventually did after washing it two times at 90 degrees)

DVD Review: Spider Guard Masterclass by Elliott Bayev & Stephen Kesting

By Guillaume (Gile) Huni, BJJ black belt and head instructor of Kimura Academy in Belgrade, Serbia.

When I was sent a copy of the ‘Spider Guard Masterclass!‘ by Elliott Bayev, I was overjoyed. I use the spider a lot in my Jiu-Jitsu and still feel that I know just the tip of the iceberg of this extremely complex and never ending guard.

The Spider Guard is a very effective type of guard in BJJ and has been heavily used since the late 1980’s.

The spider guard is specific to the gi (kimono) but can also be used in a modified way in  No Gi. It requires a strong grip, use of legs leg strength as well as good flexibility.

The 5 DVD set covers every aspect of the Spider Guard:  starting with understanding Spider Guard, the Double Biceps position, progressing to the Leg Lasso, and then covering the ‘newer’ aspects of the Spider Guards: Spider X, Collar Spider, Reverse de la Riva, etc.

The DVD set has 5 volumes with more than 9 1/2 hours of very clear and well organised instruction from experienced black belts Stephen Kesting (Of Grapplearts.com) and Elliott Bayev (Head instructor of Openmat BJJ academy in Toronto)

This is the most complete instructional ever made on the spider guard.  Every detail – from entries, to gripping, body positioning, sweeps, submissions, transitions, guard maintenance and pass prevention – is covered.

Whether you’re looking for ways to improve your spider guard and have a solid base, or whether you want to have a spider guard as good Michael Langhi or Braulio Estima, then this is the right instructional for you.

You can purchase it here.
